MacGregor Seeks Federal Funding for Lake Cowichan Weir

OTTAWA – Today in Question Period, Alistair MacGregor, Member of Parliament for Cowichan-Malahat-Langford, asked Fisheries and Oceans Minister Dominic Leblanc to provide federal funding for the raising of the Lake Cowichan weir.

“The Liberals promised to protect our communities from climate change with investments in green infrastructure, and the salmon that depend on the Cowichan River need strong federal leadership,” MacGregor said in the House of Commons. “Will the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans commit in this House today to providing federal funds to raise the Cowichan weir?”

The Minister replied that the federal government agrees that the Cowichan River is a critical piece of fish habitat, and that more must be done to protect fish habitat, but he did not signal his specific support for the weir project.
